CPD Mastering the Basics

Cornwall FA run first of 3 online CPD events for coaches across Cornwall

On Sunday 9th May, Cornwall FA hosted a ‘Mastering the Basics’ online CPD event delivered by Lawrence Lok and Vincent Halsall from the FA Coach Development Team.

Commencing with a recent coach education update, Lawrence and Vincent then led the way through providing a discussion around ‘what a skillful player means to the coaches attending’. This produced an engaging discussion, raising interesting points around a player’s ability both in and out of possession. Key priorities for youth footballers were identified including factors such as the importance of exploration and play, linking to the recent success of the England National Youth teams.

Following this, the importance of ‘Staying on the ball’ for youth player development was discussed in detail. Further interaction with the coaches in attendance, considered how staying on the ball relates to the FA’s 4 Corner Model (Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological). Simple phrases such as shield, shift and show were also suggested to help young players understand the more commonly used phrases hide, manoeuvre, and reveal the ball for players hiding the ball in 1v1 situations. CPD Mastering the Basics Slide

Next, the areas identified were applied to some real-life examples from Lawrence and Vincent. Session plans were shared, demonstrating some simple but effective 1v1 games that could be used, adapted, and applied within the coach’s sessions.

To conclude the event, the importance of developing individuals and allowing them to master the basics was accompanied by some individual questions. Further learning opportunities such as the FA Boot Room and England Football Learning YouTube were also shared.

Daniel Greenough (Cornwall FA Football Development Manager) said, “it was great to see new and returning coaches attending the online CPD and the engagement throughout was great. We look forward to seeing new and returning coaches on our future CPD events.

We have 2 more exciting online CPD events coming up so it would be great if we can extend our current reach and have a wider range of coaches attending and sharing best practice to help further develop the great work grassroots coaches are currently doing.

Looking ahead, we will be looking to do some consultation with the Cornish Football family to identify what coach support offering would be desired and best suit the needs of the local community next season. To compliment this, a blend of face to face and online events will look to further engage our local coaches”.
