Get Set For The First-Ever Women's Football Weekend

WE'RE CELEBRATING THE FIRST-EVER WOMEN'S FOOTBALL WEEKEND!

This weekend marks a landmark moment in the growing popularity of women’s football, with The FA’s first-ever Women’s Football Weekend taking place between 16-17 November.

The new annual event follows a record-breaking opening weekend in the 2019/20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League, where more than 62,000 supporters attended opening day fixtures across the country, highlighting how the interest in women’s football continues to grow.

In light of the first-ever Women’s Football Weekend taking place, Cornwall FA would like to outline the fantastic opportunities currently available to those who wish to get themselves involved locally.

HOW DO I FIND MY LOCAL CLUB?

Womens Cup Final 2019 (2)There are a number of women’s clubs in Cornwall providing football for players aged 16+. The entry level for adult teams is through the Earthbound Electrical Cornwall Women’s Football League going up to the South West Women’s League Western and Premier Divisions.

Women’s football is currently played on a Sunday afternoon and many teams have weekly training sessions taking place midweek.

WHAT IF I’M NEW TO THE GAME?

The Cornwall Women’s League now has two divisions so there are competitive opportunities available for all, regardless of whether you’re brand new to the game or more experienced.

CAN I GET MY DAUGHTER INVOLVED?

Yes, of course! Football is the number one team sport in England and around 900,000 girls aged 5-15 currently play some form of the game.

Over recent seasons we’ve been working hard to develop a girls-specific league and were delighted to launch the Cornwall Girls Football League in the 2015/16 season. This has grown year on year and now caters for U8s through to U16s. This league adopts a flexible approach and runs six weeks of indoor Futsal during the winter in addition to an annual Beach Soccer Tournament in the summer.

I HAVE A YOUNG DAUGHTER WHO HAS NEVER PLAYED BEFORE…

SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres are a perfect introduction to football for young girls aged 5-11.

Taking place on a weekly basis, either after school or at weekends, they provide a safe environment where girls who don’t currently play the game can have fun engaging with sport, make new friends, develop fundamental skills and try a variety of sessions.
