Local Referee Runs Line at Wembley

Cornwall based Referee Simon Long ran the line at the Capital One Cup Final on Sunday, in which Manchester City won the League Cup trophy after beating Sunderland 3:1.

Having been selected to officiate at the Football League's showcase final was a "fantasitc honour and privilege", says the 31-year old referee living in Truro: "I was very proud when I walked out at Wembley on Sunday. I have now completed my domestic 'set', having officiated at all of the major domestic finals."

"The weekend was a very memorable one as Dave Allison, The Referees Manager at the Football League has been a tremendous support throughout my involvement with professional football. So, it was the icing on the cake to have spent the weekend with Dave & Sheila and have the opportunity to repay Dave's support, as part of the Referees' team who successfully delivered an exciting Cup Final for the Football League."

The assistant referee at Sunday's Captial One Cup Final took up refereeing after running the line for this high-school team and passing the referees’ course in November 1996. He has never looked back since and made his Football League debut in 2007 in a League One fixture between Southend and Millwall.

Since then he has continuously progressed, officiating in Premiership fixtures as an assistant referee and being appointed to the UEFA & FIFA List of Assistant Referees in 2011.

Long, formerly Suffolk FA's referee development officer, was born in Colchester and has been Cornwall based since 2011 when he moved to Truro from Ipswich.

In 2012 he was named as a reserve assistant for the FA Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea, but he finally fulfilled his boyhood dream when he officiated in the FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Wigan last summer.

This season Long has ran the line in prominent Premier League games and also added Champions League games FC Copenhagen against Galatasaray, as well as Zenit St Petersburg against Atletico Madrid, to his portfolio.
