Youth Cup winners crowned in the Cornish sunshine

Our Youth Cup finals, sponsored by Western Counties Roofing, were hosted by Hayle AFC.

The weather could not have been any better for Cornwall FA’s Youth Cup finals, with all six matches played in glorious sunshine with a nice breeze blowing across the 3G pitch at our host club Hayle. Here is how the action played out.

Saturday – Girls Cup finals

U11 final – St Dennis 0-0 Culdrose Ravens (St Dennis win 3-2 on penalties)

The U11 girls played out a goalless draw to kick off the weekend and the deadlock still couldn’t be broken in ten minutes of extra time either. The two sides lined up for spot kicks – with St Dennis just edging it, 3-2!

U13 final – St Agnes Whites 3-2 St Day Vogue Saints

An entertaining game saw the two sides rattle in five goals between them. St Day opened the scoring before St Agnes battled back – with the game even at two apiece, the Whites netted the all-important fifth to emerge as U13 champions.

U15 final – Troon AFC Hornets 1-1 Wadebridge Wolves (Troon win 3-1 on penalties)

A goal for either side saw this one finish level. In extra time, it looked like it might be Wadebridge who were going to take it – but they couldn’t find the goal they needed and so for the second time on Saturday, we headed for penalties. It was Troon who came out on top in the shootout to lift the trophy!

Sunday – Boys/Mixed Cup finals

U13 final – Helston Athletic Dynamos 1-0 St Cleer & Liskeard

Sunday’s first final was a tight one, decided by just a single goal. In an even match it was a set-piece that decided the game as Helston Dynamos latched onto a corner that was bouncing around the box. That was all they needed as a resolute Blues’ defence stood firm to see out the game.

U14 final – Helston Athletic Hornets 5-3 Newquay Mints

Helston Hornets looked like they were heading for defeat, down 3-1 to Newquay Mints. But the Blues had an ace up their sleeve, bringing on Player of the Match Liam Tanser from the bench – he scored the equaliser before turning provider with a lofted through ball for Helston’s fourth as they overturned the deficit to lift the cup.

U15 final – St Agnes 5-3 Saltash United Dragons

The best final of the weekend was saved for last. DJM winners Saltash went a goal up early and looked comfortable in the first half, but what happened after the break was something truly special. The game went from 1-0 to 3-3 in the blink of an eye, with five goals hitting the back of the net in just six minutes! After coming from behind three times, it was underdogs St Agnes who went and got the winner thanks to a spectacular acrobatic effort!

A warm congratulations to all our winners – and to the runners-up as well, all of whom have enjoyed fantastic seasons to make it this far. All of our finals were really competitive and some of the football on display was fantastic. The finals are sure to live long in the memory of all involved. The future of Cornish football looks very bright indeed!

Our thanks go to Hayle AFC for their brilliant hospitality in hosting finals weekend. Cornwall FA would also like to thank Western Counties Roofing for their support in sponsoring all of our Youth Cups this season.
