Jon Harris at the USA Cup

Local official Jon Harris takes refereeing skills stateside

Jon was part of the refereeing team for the USA Cup, the largest youth football tournament in the western hemisphere.

The massive USA Cup in Minnesota was an exciting chance for local referee Jon Harris to showcase his skills across the pond.

The event in Minnesota saw Jon referee alongside match officials from all over the world, with referees coming from Portugal, Norway, Jamaica, Germany, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the USA – as well as Cornwall and the UK.

“On the first part of the tournament I was able to do medical cover in the morning and referee in the afternoon but in the second part of the tournament I was a lot busier,” said Jon. “I managed to get in approximately 30 matches and covered over 140 miles!”

Teams came from as far as Alaska and Brazil, Iceland and South Africa – with most US States being represented. The age groups were under 11s up to under 19s, male and female.

“I even led out the UK-based referees in the opening ceremony. I've been invited back next year by the organisers and the medical crew.” Fantastic work – well done Jon!

It is brilliant to see Cornwall’s match officials taking advantage of the opportunities on offer to them within refereeing. If you are interested in taking your first steps into refereeing, you can sign up for our upcoming course in Helston which will allow you to become a trainee referee in just one day.
