We spoke to local referee Davey Green as part of this week’s Respect the Ref campaign

This week we are speaking to local referees from across the county as part of the new Respect the Ref campaign which aims to increase the respect referees receive when officiating. Meet Davey Green.

Why did you become a referee?

I became a referee because I love football.

 

What does your life involve away from refereeing?

I worked for 30 years as Cabin Crew for British Airways. I’ve also completed 235 Marathons.

 

How long have you been a referee?

I have been refereeing since 2002.

 

What league(s) do you referee in?

Cornwall and Devon Leagues.

 

What do you feel is the best thing about refereeing/what do you enjoy about refereeing?

Making the difference and giving back to the sport that I enjoyed playing for so long.

 

What are the toughest moments for you when refereeing?

When angry players start crowding around me during games.

 

What has being a referee given you?

A social life and a means to keep active in football.
