Cornwall FA were delighted to welcome 14 walking football teams from across the county to Newquay Tretherras over the weekend.

The Walking Football Festival involved 2 age groups running simultaneously, with the over 50’s playing on the 3G pitch and the over 60’s playing indoors in the sports hall. 6v6 games were played on the 3G, with 10 teams taking part and a further 4 teams playing 5v5 games indoors.

Cornwall FA support the Walking Football community to help further develop opportunities and participation levels, with Football Development Officer Joshua Stockdale adding, “it was great to see our Walking Football teams back in action once again with more players than ever before getting involved with our Winter Festival hosted at the great facilities Newquay Tretherras School provide.

To see 14 teams and nearly 100 players lacing up to go head to head with friends from other clubs across the county, was a really special moment. Especially after the ongoing disruption Covid has caused to our Walking Football events/competitions over recent years.

As we look to the future, we hope to see the Walking Football provision in Cornwall continue to grow, innovate and provide plenty of opportunities for players of any age and skill level to find a group, team or session that they can call home.

It was also very positive to see our first ever Over 60’s festival being delivered with 4 competing teams. After continuous consultation with our clubs there has been a growing recognition that the difference in age categories can, and has, created a safer, more enjoyable playing environment for everyone involved.

We look forward to continuing this progression in 2022 and hopefully the trend of new clubs/teams wanting to get involved will continue”.
