Mari Ward: grassroots to England Lionesses

Mari Ward is 1 of 24 players across the country to be selected for England Lionesses U16’s Camp

Cornwall FA are delighted to share that Mari Ward has been selected for the England Lionesses U16’s training camp after attending a previous training camp last month.

Mari is 1 of 24 U16 players from across the Country to be selected for the upcoming training camp, a fantastic achievement and inspiration for girls across the county.

Mari’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, living in St Just Mari has had to travel across and out of the county to continue her footballing journey. Over the years, working closely with Cornwall FA, Mari has been a player at the Cornwall Advanced Coaching Centre, excelling through the age groups.

Mari is now attending additional centres such as Plymouth Argyle’s Centre of Excellence to provide a variety of football experiences to help continue her development. As part of Cornwall FA’s support Mari is now attending the Cornwall ACC where she receives individual training to complement her current football offering. Mari also attends the FA Womens High Performance Centre at Plymouth Marjon Univeristy on a weekly basis to develop her physical performance.

Speaking to Mari’s dad Jamie, he added, “I am really happy for Mari, she has worked really hard and has had lots of support from Vicky Fisher (former Cornwall FA Womens, Girls and Disability Officer) and Cornwall FA from a young age, always helping her find new challenges”.

Mari said, “I am really excited to be selected for the England U16 training camp. Camp is always a great experience and being involved with the England Lioness pathway is something I’m really enjoying.”

Cornwall FA would again like to congratulate Mari on her achievement, with Football Development Manager Daniel Greenough adding, “Cornwall FA are delighted to see Mari continue to progress through the England pathway with all her hard work being rewarded. We would also like to thank Mari’s dad (Jamie) for his continued collaboration with Cornwall FA as it has allowed us to work together to provide Mari with the most appropriate opportunities to support her footballing journey”.

Well done Mari and best of luck from Cornwall FA and the Cornish Football Family!
