Pete Sturgess returns to Cornwall for England DNA Event
Cornwall FA welcomed back Pete Sturgess, FA Technical lead to deliver Part 2 of the England DNA Foundation phase roadshow.
Over 50 coaches attended the evening which followed on from the phase 1 event last August exploring ideas around what possession looks like for our younger players and how as coaches we can support this. Phase 2 recapped the ideas from phase 1 and then started to unpick dribbling and passing as part of the England DNA.
Senior Football Development Officer Daniel Greenough said this about the event; “It was great to see so many of our football family attend the CPD event and we are very lucky to have someone like Pete deliver in the county. It is important that coaches try and embed these keys messages from the DNA to help develop our young children as players and as people. Cornwall FA is working hard to ensure we have a fit for purpose coach education offer across Cornwall supporting our coaches development.”
A big thank you to Newquay AFC Youth and their U9’s who came along to take part in the practical session. Their coach and Junior Football Development Officer, Josh Stockdale had this to say about the event;
"It was great to have Pete back in Cornwall to show us the next phase of the roadshow. I personally found the first phase very informative and Pete’s ideas/philosophies have definitely had a positive impact on my players. The second roadshow hit home on some key messages which I found very eye opening. These included allowing your players the chance to learn how to be comfortable on the ball, creating situations in which a player must protect the ball and be creative while under pressure and supporting your team to be positive, look forward and play forward without just kicking the ball away to the other team. All of which is to be developed through situational repetition with positive reinforcement from coaches. Overall it was another excellent session with Pete. After speaking to different coaches throughout the evening it was clear that the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with some coaches already starting to plan their next sessions to include key elements of the Foundation Phase England DNA. I look forward to Pete coming down again in the future to show us Part 3” – coaches perspective."
