FA County Youth Cup 1st Rd

Played at Kempston Rovers on Sunday 23rd September 2018

Cornwall U18 played their first competitive game of the season in The FA County Youth Cup and ran out 5-0 winners against Bedfordshire, the majority of the hard work was done following a blistering first half an hour which saw Glynn Hooper’s side score 4 goals and lay the foundation for what proved to be a comfortable win.

Following an eventful journey to Bedfordshire the day before the game the Cornwall players could have started a little sluggishly, but it was clear from Kick Off there was a drive and determination from the players to stamp their authority on the game.

Cornwall started off at a quick pace as the midfield 3 of Tonkin, O’connor and Hooper gave their opponents no time to settle on the ball, winning it back quickly and looking to exploit the pace of Kai Cornish and Alex Wharton on the wings, having forced Bedforshire back Cornwall won a succession of corners and it was from a corner that they took the lead. Jack Hoopers delivery from the right was met by the new Cornwall Captain Josh Storey who rose highest to thump a header into the net.

A second was not far away, Cornwall built from the back and following some lovely passing the ball found Wharton on the left wing, he beat his man and squared for Mawgan Kewn, his shot came back off the post but fell kindly for Hooper who rifled the ball home from 12 yards. Cornwall were on top and looked to press home the advantage, again some lovely passing involving Cornish, Michal Barton, and Lewis Tonkin saw the ball over to the left wing and the pacey Wharton. Wharton skipped past two players like they weren’t there and then was caught by a 3rd in box and won a penalty, Wharton stepped up to tuck the penalty away.

Cornwall were now enjoying their football, a lovely Kai Cornish through ball found O’Connor breaking from midfield but his shot was well saved by the Bedfordshire keeper, however from the resulting Hooper corner the unfortunate keeper punched the ball into this own net under pressure, a shame for the keeper who made 4 or 5 great saves throughout the game. Cornwall saw the rest of the half out, the only negative being an injury to the lively Kai Cornish which saw him replaced by Jackson Penhallurick.

It was always going to be difficult to hit the same heights in the 2nd half but what was delivered was a professional performance and a much welcome clean sheet, something thoroughly earned by the back four of Barton, Harrison Jewell, Storey and Joe Mcillroy, who really ensured that keeper Ethan Elwell had very little work to do.

Bedfordshire did start the half well and forced Cornwall back, getting into some dangerous positions but there was always someone there to snuff out the danger, Cornwall still pushed forward though and created chances, and on 65 minutes got a 5th through Morgan Kewn. Mcillroy at left back played a delightful ball through to the ever willing runner Alex Wharton, his cut back  found Lewis Tonkin whose powerful drive was blocked into the path of Kewn who fired home, a deserved goal for the striker who put in a great shirt as the loan front man.

Kewn and Hooper, after putting in great shifts were replaced by Sam Pickup and Mason Long as Cornwall saw the game out to win 5-0 and book a place in the 2nd Rd and a home tie against FA County Youth Cup holders Norfolk.

It must be said that Bedfordshire never stopped working and the hospitality and warm welcome Cornwall players, coaches, staff and parents received was first class and appreciated by all of the people who made the long journey
