SEMI FINALS SET UP FANTASTIC EASTER MONDAY FINAL!
On Tuesday night at Lux Park, home of Liskeard AFC we kicked off our Cup Finals season for the first of our RGB Senior Cup Semi-finals with a local derby between Saltash United and Torpoint Athletic. Other than an initial downpour before kick off the weather held off meaning the game was going ahead, something everyone wanted after weeks of disruption to fixtures across the County. As expected it was a close game with both teams wanting to reach the final for different reasons, Torpoint aiming to go all the way to the final for the first time since the 1995/96 season and Saltash looking to lift the Cup after a disappointing loss to Bodmin in the final last season! At half time the scores were even with neither team finding a way through, it was in the second half where Saltash took the opportunities presented and put 3 past the Torpoint keeper within 20 minutes. With minutes left Torpoint managed to pull a goal back but it was all too late for an infamous cup comeback leaving Saltash a ticket to the final!
Our other semi-final took place on Wednesday night at Helston FC between AFC St Austell and Mousehole, Helston kindly stepping in to host after our original venue Falmouth Town took storm damage from the 'Beast from the East' last week. With Mousehole being the underdogs and St Austell looking to reach the final after missing out on the last couple of seasons it was always going to be a tough game for both sides. Mousehole started strong and converted their effort on the 6 minute mark, St Austell bounced back and after only 10 minutes found the equaliser. The scores were level at half time but the drama was far from over, on 61 minutes St Austell's Chris Reski saw a straight red, reducing them to 10 men, only minutes later Liam Andrew for Mousehole was given a second yellow evening up the teams with 25 minutes to play. With both teams now down to 10 men it was a hard battle with strong challenges but neither could break the deadlock forcing extra time. Mousehole dug deep and took a 2 - 1 lead through Ziboth in the second period of extra time before he added a second in injury time, the full time score was 1-3 to Mousehole which sends them to the RGB Cornwall Senior Cup Final for the first time in their 96 year history!
The years finalists, Saltash United and Mousehole will meet on Monday 2nd April at St Blazey FC to see who is crowned Senior Cup winners this season!
A big thank you to both Liskeard and Helston who were fantastic hosts on both evenings, a credit to local football.
