Luke and Rathbone Champions

Youth talent on display in cup final double header

On a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon, Wadebridge Town Football Club hosted a County Cup double header with both the U16's Luke Cup and the U18's Rathbone Trophy being played on the same day.

First up was the U16's Luke Cup final between Wendron Utd v Callington Colts.  This game was forced into extra time when Callington Colts equalised with just seconds on the clock.  With extra time providing no further goals it was down to penalties to decide who would lift the Luke Cup. Wendron came out on top eventually winning 5-4 to become the winners of the U16's Luke Cup, congratulations to both Wendron and Callington on an excellent and closely fought game.

Next up was the U18's Rathbone Cup final between Saltash Youth and Helston Youth.  Helston opened the scoring after a couple minutes but a handball in the area saw a penalty awarded to Saltash and Joe Adkins calmly slotted the ball past Ross Atkinson in goal for Helston, Saltash then took the lead towards the end of the first half.

Just like the first half it was Helston who scored early to equalise and set up a brilliant second half.  Helston then took the lead when Matt Buchan scored a brilliant individual goal to give Helston a 3-2 lead.  Saltash however fought back when Ben Reynolds equalised with just minutes to spare.  This cup final also looked like it was going into extra time, when up pops John Williams with a headed goal with literally seconds on the clock giving Saltash Youth the winning goal and crowning them the U18's Rathbone Cup Winners for the first time in their history. Congratulations to both Saltash U18's and Helston U18's on a cracking game of football.

Thank you to everyone at Wadebridge Town Football Club for the hard work and time it took on hosting this event also thank you to all the parents and supporters for attending.  Thank you to both sets of match officials and lastly thank you to the players for providing two very entertaining games of youth football you are all a credit to your clubs.
