FA County Youth Cup Final 2017

Middlesex U18 v Cornwall U18 - Preview and Information

Middlesex U18 v Cornwall U18

FA County Youth Cup Final 2017

Saturday 1st April 2017

Venue - Barnet FC - The Hive

Kick Off - 2pm

In what will be a historic moment for Cornwall FA our U18 representative side compete in the final of The FA County Youth Cup for the first time in the history of the competition. Previously, very talented sides from the Duchy have come close but the class of 2017 is the first to get over the line and make an appearance in the final.

Led by Glynn Hooper and his fantastic management team our U18's have performed superbly all season, across all the games on the run to the final different qualities have been needed, at times we have seen sparkling football, at times we have seen resolute defending, there has always been plenty of passion and desire and when needed clinical and calm heads. We have scored 16 goals and conceded just 4 , we have beaten teams who have recently reached the final and teams who have recently won the competition and our place in the final is very much merited.

The journey started with a 7-0 win at Gloucestershire with a performance that was every bit as dominant as the score suggests, next up were 2014 winners Lancashire at Blaise Park, they were seen off 5-2 with Matt Buchan scoring 4. Sussex, last years beaten finalists were defeated in the Quarter Final 2-1 and finally a strong and uncompromising Durham side were defeated in the Semi-Final 2-1 with Blaise Park proving a lucky host for the 3rd time.

That brings us to the final and what promises to be a really tough task against Middlesex. A team who won their Semi-Final 7-2 and have looked dominant in most of their games, however if we have learnt anything it is that the current crop of Cornwall U18's will always be well prepared, always be up for the game and should never be underestimated.

As is widely documented Cornwall FA almost folded the County U18 team due to a lack of funding but thankfully the voice from the football community and sponsorship from Helical Retail meant we could keep going with the team and look to move forward. Glynn Hooper was appointed manager and brought with him a very experienced and knowledgeable back room team and what has been achieved in a little under two years is magnificent, and long may it continue.

If you are going to game independent of the Cornwall FA coach and would like to claim a free ticket please contact Richard Pallot at Cornwall FA on 01208 269010 or email Richard.pallot@cornwallfa.com

Thank You

There are plenty of people to thank for their support along the way who have all contributed to the success and enjoyment of this season.

Mark Huckle (Piran Films) and Dave Deacon (Cornish Soccer Info) have done a great job at helping to raise the profile of the U18 side and of supporting Cornwall FA in the promotion of the team. Click here for the page on Youtube where you can re-live the action and interviews from previous games. A special mention here to Steve Massey as well who in addition to being a fantastic co-commentator with Dave Deacon has also been and scouted our opposition and provided important reports for Glynn.

St Blazey FC who have hosted 3 of our 4 ties in The FA County Youth Cup this season and done a wonderful job in making every game special. Martin Richards and all the helpers at St Blazey have been wonderful and all our opposition have commented about how welcoming and professional the hosting has been. Helston Athletic and Callington also played host to us this season and did great jobs.

The clubs of Cornwall who have supported their players, it is always difficult to lose players but the support for them representing the County has been amazing. Whilst it is always a bit unfair to single out clubs in this regard it would remiss of us not to mention Camelford, who have had 6 regular team members playing for the U18's this season. All 6 have been involved in every game for Cornwall and the club has embraced this even if it has been to their own detriment at times, although without the help of The Peninsula League it could have been even tougher for Camelford, thanks also go to Falmouth Town, Newquay, Helston Athletic, West Cornwall, RNAS Culdrose, Porthleven, Mousehole, Godolphin Atlantic, Wendron United and AFC St Austell.

The supporters who have turned up to watch games and those who are attending the final. We had over 230 people at our Semi-Final and all our home games have been watched by 3 figure crowds. The coach for the final is sold out and there are many more travelling independently so thank you so much for cheering on the boys.

The Argyle Community Trust who have supported the team with generous sponsorship all season. This partnership was driven by former Cornwall U18 player Neil Slateford and has been fantastic. Pro-Direct Soccer for supplying the playing kit for the season and the commemorative tracksuits for the final and, May, Whetter & Grose, estate agents in St Austell for sponsoring the tracksuits and making sure our team look the part in the final.
