St Austell Win Junior - Senior, Replay

This season's Cornwall Junior and Senior Cup Finals have been played. The matches took place at Kimberley Stadium, home of Saltash United FC on Monday 1st April. AFC St Austell took the Junior title and the Senior game between Bodmin and Helston ended in a draw, so there'll be a replay on Tuesday 16th April Kick Off 7.30pm at Truro City FC. Truro has been chosen because it is central for both clubs and we would like to enable as many of their fans as possible to make the evening kick off.

The first title contested was the Junior Cup. AFC St Austell took an early lead through captain Phil Hutchings, which they held for the rest of the half. Gareth Pitt equalised for Illogan ten minutes into the second half. After a number of yellow and red cards, Illogan were down to 9 men. They held on but St Austell's Ben Douglas denied them a replay with a goal in the 90th minute.

BBC Radio Cornwall's commentary team named Illogan captain Steve Abbott-Smith the Man of the Match.

The Senior Cup final proved an entertaining affair with both sides having good opportunities to score. The main strikers for both teams went close but couldn't get the ball into the back of the net. Helston Manager, Sid Taylor, was sent to the stands by the referee Martin Ault  for dissent part way through the second half and the lively game went on to its 0-0 conclusion.

We would like to thank Saltash United for their hospitality and Lee Welsh, Dan Fraser, Robert Congdon, Ryan Bailey, Joseph Gill and Rhys Sharpe from Saltash United Juniors Under-14 Boys team for leading the teams out with the Respect banner.

BBC Radio Cornwall's commentary team of Jack Murley, Dick Straughan and Ben Power deserve a mention for their professional and entertaining live coverage of both games. We are also grateful to the local papers - the St Austell and Bodmin Guardians, the West Briton, the St Austell Voice, the Sunday Independent and the Packet series for their support of these finals. The Non-League paper was also represented at the matches.

The attendance for both games was 706.
