South West Counties Under 18  Youth Championship

Gloucestershire v Cornwall (2-2)

Played at Almondsbury , Bristol.

Cornwall’s youngsters went through a rollercoaster of emotions  in heavy underfoot conditions at Almondsbury where they retrieved a situation, which at one stage in the second period, looked highly improbable.

After a first half where Gloucestershire enjoyed the lion’s  share of possession they achieved the breakthrough in the closing seconds when Richard Edworthy( Forest Green Rovers FC ) scored with an angled drive.

The home side picked up from where they left off as the second half got underway and goalkeeper Sam Trudgeon( Newquay FC ) was relieved to see a strong header rebound off his crossbar. On the hour a surging  run and finish by Mike Smith ( Gloucester City FC ) resulted in goal number two for the Gloucestershire side.

Cornwall Manager Tommy Matthews immediately changed his attacking options, bringing on Ed Wilton ( Perranporth FC ) and Calllum George ( Penzance FC . This immediately had the desired effect as inside a frantic ten minute spell,  a harmless looking shot from Cameron Bidgood ( Newquay FC )  took a deflection and completely wrong footed ‘keeper Jake Underwood ( Gloucester City FC.  This gave Cornwall the lifeline to get back into the game and minutes later they achieved parity via the penalty spot following a handball offence. Cameron Bidgood’s spot kick was initially saved but Bidgood slammed home the rebound. Cornwall now scented victory against shell – shocked opponents and only desperate Gloucestershire clearances in the final minutes prevented a most unlikely outcome.

Cornwall FA Youth Secretary, David Bray said, “This was an outstanding fightback by Cornwall and one which hopefully they can repeat to a winning outcome when they entertain Somerset Youth at Penzance on Saturday 9th March.”
