Boys Cup Finals 2019

County Cups come to a close as 3 Boys FInals held in Wadebridge last sunday

The Cornwall FA U13, U14 and U15 Boys County Cup finals took place at Wadebridge Town FC on Sunday 19th May.

The first final of the day saw U13’s from Saltash United Pumas and Grasshoppers Youth play in a very close and competitive game with both teams working hard to create chances with the score remaining level at 0-0 at half time. The second half started in the same way with both teams looking to exploit the space down the channels to find a way through the rock solid defending on show. After some close calls it was the Pumas who made the break through, scoring the only goal of the game. Grasshoppers kept fighting till the end and came very close to getting one back. Both teams gave a truly amazing display of resilience, team work and game understanding which every spectator could appreciate.

Next was the turn of the U14s played between Looe Town and St Agnes. Both teams opted for a fast paced attacking style of play which led to multiple early chances for both sides. After only 5 minutes it was a goal from St Agnes which broke the deadlock. From then on it was a very organised and solid performance from both teams for the remaining 85 minutes. The crossbar was called into action multiple times and both keepers made a frenzy of excellent saves. In the end there were no more goals and St Agnes came out U14 Boys County Cup Champions.

Our final game of the day was the U15’s Final played between Saltash Youth and Falmouth United Rangers. From the opening minute it was clear we were in for a spectacle with both teams working hard to press the opposition and win the ball back high up the pitch. It was Saltash who broke the deadlock early on with a long ball over the top which, after a favourable bounce ended up in the back of the net. The second half started with the same intensity with both teams struggling to break down the oppositions defence. It was Falmouth who came back with a goal mid-way through the second half. With 20 minutes to go everything was to play for. The match winner came just a few minutes later when a penalty was awarded. It was Falmouth who came up with the calm finish in a nervous moment to give them the victory.

Throughout the day it was fantastic to see so many people supporting youth football in Cornwall. The noise from the crowd for the teams was amazing for each cup final. Thank you to Wadebridge Town for hosting the finals day and to their team of volunteers for all their help.

Also a big thank you to the team of match officials, Matthew Dark, Andy Salmon, Iain Tucker, Bob Steggles and Stuart Kane who officiated over the day.

Finally, a big thank you to this year’s Boys Cup sponsors Western Counties Roofing Merchant and to Nigel Call and Ian McHale for coming along to support on the day and for presenting the medals and trophies.
