FA Peoples Cup 2019

Hundreds of players take part in FA Peoples Cup

Last weekend Cornwall FA hosted The FA Peoples Cup first round in the female, walking football, disability and veterans categories. We were delighted to run the event at the fantastic facilities at Callywith College in Bodmin with its new 3G pitch.

The weekend kicked off with our open age female category. Six teams were competing to take the top spot throughout the morning. The games were high tempo and the spectating teams and supporters created a great atmosphere. The final between Charlestown and Bude Town was very close with both teams pressing high and attacking quickly to try steal an early goal. Although both keepers were on top form and kept it close, it was Charlestown Ladies B who were victorious in a deciding penalty shoot-out and will be progressing to the next round.

The second category to take centre stage was Walking Football, 9 teams from across the County were in attendance and it was clear from early on that there would be no easy games. The competition on display was of the highest level and it lead to a thrilling final which was won by a well-disciplined Newquay side.

Sunday morning started off with three disability competitions and three places in the next round up for grabs. The atmosphere was electric with plenty of supporters and teams cheering on every match. With three finals taking place the excitement was building, in the Youth competition it was Penzance who took top spot after showing continuously strong performances across their games. In the league group it was Troon Leopards who stole the show with goals Match of the Day would want in their highlight real. To finish off the mornings football it was St Agnes who came out of their final victorious in the championship category.

The final category to take place in this year’s Cornwall FA Peoples Cup, Round 1 was the Veterans. A wonderful 11 teams were competing across two pools all trying to grab themselves a place in the final. After two very close pools came to a end two teams prepared themselves to face off in the final. The game went right down to the wire with both Downderry Hotspur and St Agnes AFC Bolsters taking the game to penalties. After what seemed to be the longest penalty shootout in the history of Cornish football it was St Agnes who fired a shot over the crossbar. After a calm finish in a nervous moment it was Downderry Hotspurs who came out on top and now move on to represent Cornwall in the next round of the FA Peoples Cup.
