Pete Sturgess CPD Event (7)

Biggest ever event as Pete Sturgess delivers DNA Roadshow

The Cornwall FA Development Team and FA Coach Mentor team were delighted to see a fantastic 78 coaches attend the FA England DNA Foundation Phase Roadshow at Brannel School, St Austell last night. This was our biggest event in recent times and having the support of an FA legend like Pete Sturgess has meant a large number of our grassroots volunteers will have received some valuable information to support their players.

On the evening Pete delivered a presentation in the lecture theatre for the first hour, focusing on the way we coach our players, the history of youth coaching in England and how coaches can now change the way they deliver to create a new generation of exciting, confident and attacking minded players. He focused on the role of the coach and how important it was to support each child to develop without focusing on the score line but more the way children play. In addition, Pete pointed out the need to ensure children access other sports and activities, stating grassroots coaches should encourage this to allow children to receive as many physical opportunities and practices as possible.

The session then moved out onto the pitch with Pete delivering hidden core exercises, creating dynamic movements and having contact with other players. This followed onto a 1 v 1 game which encouraged players to be creative with the ball but also focused on shielding to retain possession.

After this Pete, supported by Cornwall County Coach Developer, Chris Morris moved the practice into 2 games, the focus changed into encouraging players to dribble into space- even if this was going backwards. This is a key area of the roadshow, trying to get coaches out of the habit of asking players to 'play the way they face'! Throughout the practical Pete spent a lot of time praising players, encouraging them to try new things, being confident on the ball and creating a supportive environment so if a mistake is made, they will still try it again next time.

The evening came to an end in the theatre where Pete led a de-brief of the practical session and a question & answer session with the 78 coaches in attendance. Thank you to all of those coaches that travelled from across the County, your commitment to learn and improve yourselves will be shown in the development of your players.

A big thank you to the St Stephens U9/10's team who came along for Pete to deliver his practical session to.

We would also like to thank Pete for coming to deliver his roadshow in Cornwall, it isn't very often we get an opportunity to host an event like this and it is clear to see after so many attended that the grassroots coaching community are always looking to learn something new. We are delighted that Pete will be returning later this season to deliver the next Phase of the Roadshow, something we are sure will be well attended by Cornish coaches again.
