Callington Ladies Win Semi-Final Derby

Callington Town Ladies FC played Launceston Ladies FC at Liskeard on Tuesday 25th March 2014.

Cornwall FA Women's Cup Semi-Final

In a well-supported match Callington Town and Launceston Ladies competed last night for a place in the Cornwall Women’s Cup Final. It was set to be a tight match, with both South West Women’s Football League sides having won a League encounter each this season and only two places setting the teams apart in the League table at present.

The match kicked off in cold and windy conditions under the lights at Lux Park, home of Liskeard Athletic FC. In the opening phase Launceston carried a threat with their fast strikers on counter attacks, which unsettled the Callington defence. But it was Callington Town midfielder Jodie Shipton who scored the first goal in the 17th minute to put her team 1:0 ahead, driving a long range shot diagonally into the far right top corner of the goal and beyond the reach of the keeper.

Encouraged by the opening goal Callington started to create more chances in this closely contested game and a corner by Callington left back Samantha Veal dropped into the 6-yard box in the 35th minute, resulting in a goal mouth scramble and what appeared to be an unfortunate own goal by the Launceston defence.

With a 2:0 lead Callington started the second half in a composed manner, dominating phases of play. The team of Launceston Ladies’ manager Edward Horn however showed great fighting spirit and continued to work hard, applying pressure and challenging every ball in an attempt to get back into the game, until match official Wynroe Heath blew for the final whistle much to the delight of Town’s players and supporters.

Callington Town Ladies will now play the winners of tonight’s second semi-final between Bude Town Ladies and Dobwalls Ladies in the Cornwall Women’s Cup Final on Sunday 13th April 2014.

Cornwall FA would like to take this opportunity to extend its thanks to Liskeard FC for allowing the Association to host this Womens Cup Semi-Final at their premises.
