Bodmin v Saltash in the Senior Cup Semi-Final

Bodmin Town v Saltash United at Blaise Park on Wednesday 12th March 2014.

The defending title holders took on last year’s Easter Monday hosts Saltash United on a misty and cold evening in front of a crowd of 150 people under floodlights at Blaise Park, St Blazey FC.  The two teams drew 0-0 in their league fixture the previous week, so it was expected to be a tight game.

Manager Darren Gilbert’s team got off to a dream start with Lee Doel running on to a through ball from Sam Matthews, driving the ball low and into Tom Backler’s net after only two minutes played.

But despite the early goal the game was not to be a one-sided affair – Sam Hughes attempt to equalise was saved brilliantly by Town’s keeper Kevin Miller in the 11th minute. Saltash then started to dominate the game and after a weak clearance from a corner Jon Hoyles scored for Saltash. Moments later Bodmin thought they had extended the lead again, but Wright’s attempt to score was ruled offside just before half-time.

The second half saw Bodmin picking up the pace again with chances occurring in quick succession at either end. But it was Chris Wright for Bodmin Town who tipped the game in their favour in the 79th minute when he, just moments after he was brought on, curled a shot over the Saltash keeper. A Saltash defender attempted to clear the ball from under the bar, but it was ruled that the ball had fully crossed the line.

Following their 2:1 win Bodmin Town, Senior Cup winners in the last four years, are now set to compete against AFC St. Austell in the Cornwall Senior Cup Final on Easter Monday, after the Lillywhites beat St. Blazey AFC 3:1 last night at Mount Wise.
