Jasmine Helps England And Meets her Fans

Cornish footballer, Jasmine Matthews, played a key part in the successful campaign of the England Under-19s team to reach the Finals of the UEFA Women’s European U19 Championship in Turkey this July. She has also met some local youngsters at a tournament in Bristol.

She played in all three qualifying matches earlier this month as the England team secured victories over Finland, Wales and Austria.
Jasmine, who is from Redruth, plays in the FA Women's Super League as a midfielder for Bristol Academy where she is studying. She has featured in the Under-19s squad since last year and says of the latest matches, “The whole experience was unbelievable, playing a competitive game when we knew we had to win was a massive buzz to me and the team. Missing out on the previous trip to La Manga because of injury was disappointing but then getting selected and playing the full three 90-minutes was amazing! “

Proud parents Sue and Doug were able to see Jasmine play in the match against Finland and they are so happy  that al the hard work Jasmine has put in over the years is beginning to pay off.

Jasmine says, “I have had great support from my family ever since I took up football and from my coaches. When you get to this level, the training is very demanding and the coaches expect a lot of you.”  She has been kicking a ball ever since she can remember and joined Goonhavern Girls FC when she was 10. She has since played for Truro City Girls and was in the Under-16 squad at the Cornwall FA Girls’ Centre of Excellence.

“I really want to thank all the coaches who’ve helped me over the years I’ve played football”, she added.

Jasmine also attended the recent FA Girls Football Festival Roadshow at Filton College, Bristol with other players from Bristol Academy. Players from Cornwall FA Girls Player Development Centre were there too and the girls had the chance to meet Jasmine and her collegaues and ask questions in a session at the end of the day and show off their skills on the various FA Girls Football Roadshow activities.

Cornwall FA Player Development Centre Coach, Ashley Harris said: "It was a great day for the girls and was a real inspiration and insight for them to meet Bristol Academy WFC First Team players and ask questions.
A highlight was also meeting Jasmine Matthews, formely a player at the Cornwall FA Centre of Excellence and now plays for Bristol Academy WFC and England!  It really inspired the girls meeting a local player and what success she has had. They collected autographs throughout the day, participated in all the matches with great effort and were all buzzing on the journey home! A big thank you to Gloucestershire FA, Bristol Academy WFC and the FA Womens Super League organisers for staging the day!"
