about the cornwall fa charity cup

Current Cup Holders: Mousehole AFC (2017/18)

Each year Cornwall FA chooses a worthy local charity to benefit from this 16 team invitee only competition and this year’s chosen charity is for the second season in a row ‘The Invictus Trust’, helping teenagers with mental health issues in Cornwall.

History of the Cup

The Durning-Lawrence Charity Cup began when the late Sir Edward Durning-Lawrence presented a cup to Truro AFC for charitable purposes and the cup was later handed to the Cornwall County Football Association to organise an annual competition for charity.   Each year Cornwall FA chooses a worthy local charity to benefit from this 16 team invitee only competition and this year’s chosen charity is ‘The Invictus Trust’, helping teenagers with mental health issues in Cornwall.

The Invictus Trust

The Invictus Trust was founded by the Cowburn family in 2010 following the tragic loss of their son and brother aged just 18 after a short period of mental illness. The Invictus Trust is a small charity which aims to support and offer services to local Cornwall teenagers who are suffering from poor mental health and associated issues.

The Invictus Trust, named after the poem that inspired Ben, written by Ernest Henley and used by Nelson Mandela as a source of strength during his jail sentence on Robben Island, is led and driven by young people and aims to raise awareness through events, campaigns, social media and giving talks in school about adolescent mental wellbeing.  From black tie balls to wellbeing days, from Christmas markets to club nights – we believe in running great events that young people want to be a part of and running a mental health charity that young people want to be a part of!!

"We have been lobbying for an adolescent mental health unit to be built in Cornwall as currently there are no facilities for anyone under the age of U18, who needs residential mental health care to be cared for in their own county.  We fund the parents of these children with a travel grant from our ‘Anchor Fund’ supporting them to visit their children in locations as far away as Manchester and Kent.

After over 6 years campaigning the NHS have been granted £5 million to build a new unit and we are working to make it truly fit for purpose.  It is an opportunity to innovate and we aim to be the first in the county caring for 13-25 year olds". The new unit is currently being built in Bodmin.
