Known as Joe, he represented the Penzance area on the Council from 1988 until ill health forced his retirement a few years ago and he was subsequently awarded Life Membership of the Association.
Joe was instrumental in setting up Marazion Blues FC and was its club secretary for many years before becoming a member of Cornwall FA's Council.
He received his FA 50 year service award in 2003.
Cornwall FA President, Brian Conyon commented, “ Joe was as nice a character as you could wish to meet. He was a football man through and through. Wherever you went, people knew Joe – and that included lots of other counties too as he was a member of the county youth committee for many years.
“Joe was respected in the east of Cornwall as well as his own patch in the west. He was a good friend as well as a great asset to the game.”
Mr Whitford’s funeral will be on 8th February at 11am at Penmount Crematorium, Truro.
A minute’s silence was held at the recent County Youth side’s game in Wiltshire in Joe’s honour.
