80 year old Jack Prowse from Wendron came 2nd in the Step 7 and below category.

Jack has only been involved with football for about 15 years. He worked in newspapers until he retired, which meant working on a Saturday. He spent many years at the Sunday Independent in Plymouth and was Group Production Manager at The Packet Newspapers in Falmouth.

As well as keeping the Wendron pitches in good order, Jack does the Match Day Programme, for which he was awarded 2nd place from the programmes produced for clubs in the SWPL Division 1 West.

Jack said,”I would like to thank Cornwall FA for putting me forward for the award, also for the support they gave me on the day. To me it was one of the highlights of my life. The ground has been my life since I lost my wife 4 years ago. It’s given me a chance to put a little back into the game and to keep me active”

The event, which was hosted at Windsor Racecourse and featured Mark Lawrenson as special guest, saw groundsman from the Premier League down to Step 7 football recognised at a celebration lunch. Paul Willis of Truro City came 3rd in the Southern League at Step 3 to 4.

Mervyn Leggett from The FA’s Pitches & Facilities committee was quick to pay tribute to groundsman around the country: “The FA is very proud to host this, the eighth annual Groundsman of the Year awards, and we’re delighted to see the standard of pitches and playing surfaces improving dramatically every season.
