Female Football Day For Precious Lives Appeal

Sunday 6th of April saw a feast of female football at Enys Parc St Agnes with over 80 females aged from 12 -50 years taking to the turf in a celebration of female football and raising funds for The Precious Lives Appeal for a Children's Hospice in Cornwall.

The day kicked off with a Girls 11 a-side Under 14s match as St Agnes AFC took on Charlestown - both teams presently compete in the Kernow 7 aside Youth League with Charlestown having finished their season in 2nd position and St Agnes 4th. The game was evenly matched - both teams struggling with the idea of the offside rule which doesn't feature in the 7 aside game - Charlestown coming out the winners 2-0.

The second match of the day saw the first ever Cornish Female Veterans side take to the pitch with players having travelled from Looe, Bude, Launceston, Hayle and all over Cornwall to be part of this 'first ever' fixture! A fine side gathered with years of experience between them, an average age of 45 and many still playing within Division 1 of the Cornwall Ladies League. They proved a force to be reckoned with and their selected opposition (with an average age of only 24!) battled but struggled to keep them at bay! The final result 2-0 to the veterans.

The first goal a superb strike by Jill Haines from Launceston and the second by Anita Symonds from Bude. Veterans captain for the day Bella Richards from Hayle commented,"We had a really great time, it was fun to be part of and the only problem I had as captain was convincing the ladies to come off to let the others have a go - they just wanted to stay on the pitch for the whole game!"

The last match of the day was The Division 3 Kimmins Cup Final between Holmans Ladies and Penzance Ladies, a fiercely competed match with Penzance the victors at 2-0.

The whole day was sponsored by Martyn Kimmins Print with all players in all of the matches receiving medals or awards but as the presentation was commenced for the Cup Final Mandy Kimmins was surprised to find the tables turned on her by the Cornwall FA Assistant Secretary Len Lobb and Jaipur Cornwall Women's League secretary David James who presented her with a trophy from the league for an outstanding contribution to grass roots football (Photo left).

The final total raised for the Precious Lives Appeal was £630.55.
