Cornwall Women's Cup

Newquay win the 2007-2008 Cup Final.

Penzance 0-4 Newquay

Played on Wednesday 9th April at Falmouth Town FC.
Newquay retained the Cornwall Cup for a seventh season, with a 4-0 defeat of Penzance, watched by around 200 spectators at Falmouth Town FC. Consolation for the Magpies came in the form of the 'player of the match' award, which went to their captain, Julie Lawrence.
After the holders had the first chance, heading a corner wide, a Lauren Hosking effort landed on the roof of the Newquay net after a pass by Sarah Mansfield. Hosking forced a corner which was wasted and within a few minutes, Newquay were suddenly 2-0 up. With ten minutes played, Dawna Dennett worked sufficient space to fire in a low shot into the centre of the goal, beating Lyndsey Williams. Five minutes later and Dennett struck again, a powerful drive which WIlliams got behind but spilled inside her near post.
Penzance forced Newquay into conceding three free-kicks around the edge of the box but none were taken advantage of. An Amber Grose effort was comfortably taken after Hosking was fouled and after a great ball from Grose, Rose Knuckey was brought down but Katie Barker's free-kick didn't trouble Sally-Anne Thompson. When Grose was fouled in a central position, Dani Small drove the ball to the far post but Hosking couldn't apply the necessary touch. A typically timely and solid Emma Hurworth tackle forced Newquay wide, with the resulting hook shot one of a few clearing the bar. Amy Hemingway also made a vital interception on the edge of the area to keep the score to 2-0 at half-time.
A threatening surge from Sam Blake was abruptly ended by another Hurworth challenge, with Sarah Mansfield shooting over on the turn at the other end. The game was settled with another pair of goals in a five-minute spell, the first a twice-taken 56th minute Leanne Lapham penalty. Annie Richards came off the bench to score with almost her first touch, the ball slipping under the keeper.
Williams made a brave claim at the feet of a forward, likewise her opposite number, as Mansfield was ready to pull the trigger from Grose's pass. The Magpies'efforts at a consolation were to be frustrated though, as a Barker corner was met by the head of Clare Boyd but cleared off the line and when Small connected well with a first-time drive, the keeper's reactions were equal, even though it was her second match of the day, having already played in a student final in Bristol.

The Semi-Finals

Saltash 0-1 Penzance on Tuesday 19th February at Newquay FC.

A depleted Ashes side missing three first team regulars put in a performance to be proud of against South West Premier League leaders Penzance at Newquay. With regular keeper Dan Bradford away, Sam Drewery took over between the posts and was only beaten by a superb chip from the edge of the box from Claire Boyd just after the half hour. Penzance were the dominant side throughout but Saltash made them work really hard for the win even though Penzance hit the woodwork 3 times in the first half. The Ashes back four were solid under great pressure giving Drewery the protection she needed and the midfield chased and harried all night not allowing Penzance time on the ball. Strikers Coral Smith and Emma Pemberton never allowed the Penzance defence time to settle either and created a few half chances. In fact Pemberton almost forced extra time when set free on 75 mins. Faced with a one on one with the Penzance keeper, she shot narrowly wide. Manager Steve Drewery said afterwards "After Sundays poor showing at Bude, we got the reaction we wanted tonight from the girls. Missing our regular keeper and two other influential players (Martine and Stacey) holding Penzance to a single goal was a tremendous effort from everyone. There are some tired legs out there tonight. We had a game plan, stuck to it and nearly sneaked an equalizer. Im proud of the showing tonight." Wilf Frith.
